Last Friday marked my tenth day as the Foundation’s new Marketing Associate. It also marked the release of the Foundation’s BIG Day of Giving Report to the Community—so while all of my new colleagues reminisced about the exhausting, exhilarating day they had at the Foundation’s “BIG DoG Command Center” on May 5, I was remembering the day from a slightly different perspective: that of a nonprofit staff member.

A few years ago, I made some pretty impactful lifestyle changes in an attempt to be healthier. It was more than just eating healthier or moving my body – everything I did became a conscious decision to be better and stronger.  I eliminated a lot of things, but added a lot, too. Last year during the Arts Day of Giving, it seemed like everyone was buzzing about the unknown yet top-performing Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corpsthat came out of nowhere and raised $16,000 and won $3,000 in prizes. Naturally, we wanted to see which new unknown organization would rise up and do very well during the BIG Day of Giving. Each time I step onto my yoga mat, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the wisdom that created the practice for all – the teachers who guide me through and the students who share the journey. Yoga has seen me through life’s transitions, and it is always there when I have the grace to accept it.

If you were one of the BIG Day of Giving nonprofits participating in the #givebigdog social media challenge on Tuesday March 25th, we hope you learned a lot! The Foundation has a deep purpose in elevating the nonprofit sector, in making the sector much more transparent and, frankly, pushing you all a little harder to be more strong, smart, and successful. I say that with deep respect. Here’s why: We know you all work incredibly hard, sometimes on nights and weekends, occasionally missing your child’s basketball game or denying yourself to go to the gym because, well, you are mission-critical.
