Grants Advisory Board for Youth
The Grants Advisory Board for Youth (GABY) supports area youth by developing their knowledge of philanthropy and community-building skills through service learning.
Led by local youth, for local youth
Each year, young grantmakers on the Sacramento Region Community Foundation’s Grants Advisory Board for Youth award thousands of dollars to support youth-led projects at local nonprofits and schools.Since its inception in 2003, GABY has granted over $500,000 to more than 300 youth-led projects throughout the Sacramento region.

Criteria
GABY will award grants of up to $500 to projects that:
- Respond to this year’s theme of: “Youth-led initiatives that provide opportunities to equitably access wellness, the outdoors, arts, or other community supports.”
- Involve youth (between 10 and 19 years old) in meaningful leadership and decision-making roles, so that they are regarded as resources, not just recipients of services. For reference, GABY aims to fund projects that reflect rungs seven and eight of Hart’s Ladder of Young People’s Participation.
- Impact youth in the community, not just the project planners. In particular, projects that meet a need in support of historically or currently underserved populations and projects that amplify existing efforts or help organizations increase their reach or sustainability are encouraged.
- Promote interaction and cooperation among youth, and between youth and adults.
Funded projects must:
- Be sponsored by a nonprofit organization or school.
- Take place in El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, or Yolo counties.
- Have leaders able to attend GABY convenings. The dates for these convenings are January 13 and May 28, 2024. Please note that these events may take place in person or virtually.
Funding can pay for:
- Materials or supplies: physical items needed to complete your project. Examples: refreshments, art supplies, decorations, and space rentals.
- Equipment: items that will likely last beyond the term of the project. Examples: books, software, and cameras.
- Travel: expenses that will allow travel. Examples: bus passes, auto rental, and other transportation costs within the eligible counties.
- Professional services: fees paid for speakers, entertainers, or other professionals hired for your project. This does not include payment of fees to the youth team members.
- Communications and outreach: includes postage, printing, design, and other costs for producing publications or fees associated with marketing/media coverage.
