Everything about my SVP Fast Pitch experience was fantastic. As soon as I heard about the opportunity, it sounded like exactly what Women’s Empowerment needed to gain some valuable feedback and meet new people. We got all of that, and much, much more.

Last Friday marked my tenth day as the Foundation’s new Marketing Associate. It also marked the release of the Foundation’s BIG Day of Giving Report to the Community—so while all of my new colleagues reminisced about the exhausting, exhilarating day they had at the Foundation’s “BIG DoG Command Center” on May 5, I was remembering the day from a slightly different perspective: that of a nonprofit staff member.

Last year during the Arts Day of Giving, it seemed like everyone was buzzing about the unknown yet top-performing Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corpsthat came out of nowhere and raised $16,000 and won $3,000 in prizes. Naturally, we wanted to see which new unknown organization would rise up and do very well during the BIG Day of Giving. Orchestrating the BIG Day of Giving was a monstrous task. If I was to use this post to outline every step, every task, every meeting, it would no longer be a blog post, but a long and tedious novel – so I will spare you! While I and the team at the Foundation took these tasks head on, it certainly could not have happened without collaboration. I have heard people say how collaboration is hard, or that it’s easier to just do it all yourself. While there might be some nuggets of truth in those statements, I have to say that I don’t truly believe it – or rather – I refuse to. Collaborating, in all its forms, was one of the most rewarding aspects of working on the BIG Day of Giving.

As our region is preparing for the BIG Day of Giving on May 6th, I am checking out nonprofit profiles on the GivingEdge. I wanted to find one that personally connected with my life, and I found an organization that is now at the top of my list – ALS Association of Greater Sacramento Chapter.
