New Board Members' expertise will support the Foundation’s community leadership initiatives
We are pleased to welcome Elaine Abelaye-Mateo and Steven Weiss to the Foundation's Board of Directors. The two community leaders will contribute an array of experience in support of our work to strengthen the capital region through collaborative partnerships and philanthropy.
“Elaine and Steven bring a tremendous wealth of knowledge, experience, and relationships to the Foundation,” said Kate Stille, Chair of the Foundation’s Board. “Their leadership will be invaluable as we continue addressing some of our area’s most significant issues and building an even more equitable community to ensure our region grows stronger through the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.”
The professional successes of the newly elected Board members are matched by their shared commitment to community service, highlights of which are described below:
ELAINE ABELAYE-MATEO: As Founder and Principal Consultant of Everyday Impact Consulting, Abelaye-Mateo has developed innovative strategies to create social good—including, recently, partnering with the Foundation to coordinate 2020 Census outreach in Northern California. As a donor and community leader, Abelaye-Mateo has contributed her leadership to the Foundation’s work for years: She has served on the Foundation’s Community Impact Committee for nine years, and in 2013, she co-founded the Foundation’s APIs RISE Fund to grow Asian Pacific Islander (API) giving in the region.
Formerly Executive Director of Asian Resources, Inc., Abelaye-Mateo has served on the boards of several community organizations. She has received the Inaugural Women of Influence Award from OCA Sacramento, the Exceptional Woman of Color Award from Sacramento Cultural Hub, and the Inaugural Equity Award from the Sacramento Housing Alliance. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Organizational Systems and holds degrees in Management and Communication.
STEVEN WEISS: Weiss is a seasoned business strategist with more than 25 years of experience at some of Northern California’s most prominent public, private, and nonprofit organizations. Prior to establishing The Weiss Group in 2007, he was vice president of Marketing & Public Affairs for The Sacramento Bee. He was also director of University Cultural Programs at UC Davis, where he chaired the building committee and served on the team responsible for generating philanthropic support for the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.
Dedicated to community service, Weiss is a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum’s Mountain Valley Chapter (ALF-MVC) and serves on the board of directors for Capital Public Radio. He has served on the boards of KVIE, the Sutter Davis Hospital Foundation Board, Sacramento State’s College of Business Administration, and ALF-MVC. Additionally, Weiss served on the City of Sacramento’s Creative Edge Steering Committee. He has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Sacramento Metro Chamber and received the Arts Leadership Award by the Sacramento Arts and Business Council.
“I have had the privilege of working in partnership with both Elaine and Steve on shared community projects and I am thrilled they will now be more closely involved with the Foundation,” said Linda Beech Cutler, the Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer. “Their knowledge and leadership will be invaluable.”
