Cole Receives Prestigious Don Poole Award

Ten philanthropic advisors recognized for growing local charitable giving

February 27, 2020

Dawn Cole, a retired attorney at McDonough Holland & Allen law offices, was awarded the Foundation’s prestigious Don Poole Award last week for her significant contributions to the growth of philanthropy in the region.

Cole is the tenth to receive the honor, which is awarded to professional advisors in the region who exemplify commitment to charitable causes, devotion to educating clients about charitable giving, and mentorship of fellow advisors to support their own clients’ philanthropy.

Cole, accepting the Don Poole Award as Poole's widow looks on.

“Throughout her career, Dawn has had numerous discussions with clients about the importance of philanthropy and, to this day, Dawn displays a personal commitment to philanthropy,” said Linda Beech Cutler, the Foundation’s chief executive.

Cole has served as president of the Sacramento Women Lawyers Bar association, as president of the Sacramento County Bar Estate Planning and Probate section, as a member of the American Red Cross Planned Giving Committee, and as a member of the Sacramento Estate Planning Council. She is currently on the Board for Street Soccer USA and has served on the Board of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Greater Sacramento Chapter and serves as President of the Sacramento Valley Women’s Soccer League.

“I worked so closely with Don Poole over a 30-year period, so this is just the most special honor,” Cole said after she was surprised with the Award at the Foundation’s annual Bridge Builders event to recognize professional advisors who foster philanthropy in the capital area.

Cole was selected by her peers to receive the Award, which is named for Poole, an estate planning attorney and former Foundation board member, who left an inspiring legacy for fellow advisors when he died in 2009. He and Cole worked alongside each other for decades at the McDonough Holland & Allen law firm, and together enabled their clients to make a difference through their charitable giving.
