Building Nonprofit Capacity

Supporting vital community needs through capacity building

Strong nonprofits make vital contributions to transforming communities like ours, and nonprofit leaders need skills, tools, and resources to respond to their communities' needs—and their organizations' needs—quickly, efficiently, and effectively.

MEETING CAPACITY BUILDING NEEDS, PROMPTLY

Launched in 2015, our Immediate Need Grants aimed to respond quickly and strategically to the pressing needs of the Sacramento region. The program received over 350 proposals and awarded nearly $600,000 to local nonprofit organizations serving a range of sectors—including health, homelessness and human services, and the environment—in our four-county region.

Capacity Building Micro Grants

Last year, we evolved the program's grant criteria to magnify one of its initial focus areas: capacity building. Through our Capacity Building Micro Grant program, we swiftly support organizations pursuing capacity-related projects that will greatly impact their ability to serve the community. This iteration of the funding opportunity maintains the spirit of the Immediate Need Grants program and reinforces its alignment with our mission to transform our community through focused leadership and advocacy that inspire partnerships and expand giving.

The Lab Capacity Building Program

The Foundation's newest capacity building program, The Lab, focuses on fostering a thriving nonprofit sector by supporting diverse and emerging nonprofit leaders to achieve meaningful change in the communities they serve.

A nine-month leadership and innovation program, The Lab is intended to accelerate new ideas in the social sector, build nonprofit innovation skills and capacity, and strengthen and support nonprofit leaders so that impact-driven organizations are maximized to their fullest potential for communities to benefit and thrive.
