Give to Your Fund
We understand giving comes in all shapes and sizes. In addition to the popular options below, do you have other types of assets to contribute to your fund — real estate, life insurance, and more? Visit Ways to Give and contact your Philanthropy Team for assistance.
| How to Give | |
|---|---|
| Cash by Check | Send a check payable to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, indicating the name of the charitable fund you wish to support in the memo line. Mail the check to: Sacramento Region Community Foundation 955 University Avenue, Suite A Sacramento, CA 95825 |
| Credit Card or Electronic Bank Transfer | Use our secure online donation form to search for the charitable fund you’d like to support and make a credit card gift or electronic bank transfer. After making your gift, you will receive a tax receipt for the full amount of your gift immediately via email. |
| Appreciated Stock/Securities | Gifts of appreciated securities often allow you to make a substantial contribution while receiving valuable income tax advantages. Generally, a donor may qualify for a charitable deduction based on the value of the gift, and the capital gain from the donated asset passes tax-free to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. To transfer appreciated stock to a charitable fund, complete a Stock Transfer Form with your broker. Then, please contact your Philanthropy Team to facilitate the deposit into the charitable fund you wish to support. |
| ACH/Bank Transfer | Make a gift through your bank by using a low-cost ACH transfer. Gifts are typically received in 3-5 business days and offer a low fee of $5, avoiding potentially higher credit card or wire transfer fees. Log in to the donor portal and click the Donate button for the charitable fund you’d like to grow with your contribution. When prompted, select US Bank Account. |
| Wire Transfer | To make a gift of cash to a charitable fund at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation via domestic wire transfer, please contact your Philanthropy Team. |
| IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution | If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can make a direct transfer from your IRA, known as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation of up to $108,000 per year and avoid paying taxes on the distribution. If you are subject to required minimum distributions from your IRA, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of that requirement. You can make a QCD gift to create or add to a Field of Interest Fund, Designated Fund, Scholarship Fund, Unrestricted Fund, Nonprofit Fund, and our Impact Fund. (While Donor Advised Funds, Business Funds, and Giving Circle Funds cannot receive gifts of QCDs, they can accept gifts of Required Minimum Donations.) To qualify for a tax-free QCD, your IRA administrator must initiate the gift and send it directly to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. For information on how to take advantage of this tax-smart option, contact your IRA plan administrator or your Philanthropy Team. |
| Charitable Gift Annuities | In exchange for a gift of cash or appreciated securities, you can receive a generous income (partially tax-free) for your life, secure an immediate charitable income tax deduction, and provide a legacy gift to support your favorite charity at your passing. For more information, please download our Charitable Gift Annuity Fact Sheet. For a personalized illustration, please contact your Philanthropy Team. |
| Bequests, Wills, and Trusts | You can make a bequest to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation through your will or living trust. Donors who leave a charitable bequest may qualify for an estate tax deduction based on the value of the gift. You can state your bequest as a set amount of cash, securities, or other assets; or as the “residue” or a “percentage of the residue” of your estate. For many, the bequest language can be as simple as: “I, [Name], of [City, State, Zip Code], give [Particular Asset; Fixed Dollar Amount; Percentage of the Estate; or Description of Property] to [Your Fund Name] at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.” To learn more, please contact your Philanthropy Team. |

Fees from charitable funds at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation fund our operations and are re-invested into communities through grantmaking, programs, and initiatives that support urgent regional needs. Our support fees vary based on fund type and, in some cases, on the size of the fund. The support fee for your charitable fund is indicated on your fund agreement, which is accessible in the donor portal. See our current fee schedule.
You can name your charitable fund at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation as a beneficiary in your will or living trust to secure your philanthropic legacy and retain complete control over the assets during your lifetime, while earning a full charitable deduction on estate taxes. This type of gift – called a charitable bequest – can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage or all of your estate, or what remains after other bequests are made.
For more information, and to alert us of your planned gift and provide instructions, please contact your Philanthropy Team.
Yes, our team is available to research nonprofit organizations working in the areas of interest to you. We can provide a list of organizations and even connect you to help build meaningful relationships. We also make GivingEdge, the database of Sacramento area nonprofits that powers Big Day of Giving, available to our community year-round, and often recommend using its advanced search features to discover new nonprofits in the Sacramento region.ow
Donors with Donor Advised Funds or Nonprofit Funds can direct grants from their charitable funds at any time by logging in to the Donor Portal or completing a Grant Recommendation Form. Our granting policy recommends Donor Advised Fundholders direct grants at least once a year, and requires a grant to be distributed at least once every three years.
Donors with Donor Advised Funds can give to organizations anywhere in the United States that are certified 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. Our staff does the due diligence to ensure all nonprofit recipients are in good standing and actively certified as a 501(c)(3). You are not able to grant to individuals using a Donor Advised Fund.
You can ask to be completely anonymous in all your grants through the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. The Foundation maintains the highest level of confidentiality with respect to fund information. We do not release the personal or financial information of any individual or organization without the consent of the donor.
If you have a Donor Advised Fund, you can add family members, friends, and others as current fund advisors to your charitable fund to actively make grants. All fundholders can name relatives as successor advisors to carry on fund management — including grantmaking, if applicable — after your lifetime.

Once a fund is established as endowed, it is intended to last forever — the principal is permanently invested to generate charitable support year after year. This ensures your generosity has lasting impact. The Foundation does not convert endowed funds to non-endowed for a number of reasons:
- To Honor Donor Intent: We keep our promise to the original charitable purpose set when the fund was created.
- To Treat Everyone Fairly: The same standard applies to all fundholders, regardless of size, type, or circumstance.
- To Keep Gifts Working: Endowments provide support forever, not just for today.
- To Protect Trust: We are committed to careful stewardship of every charitable gift.
We understand circumstances can change. If your needs or priorities change, we’ll work with you to explore options — such as adjusting your annual grantmaking plan, creating a separate spendable fund, or reviewing spending flexibility — while preserving your fund’s principle and long-term purpose. See our full Un-endow Policy in Financials & Forms and please contact us with questions.
We are happy to provide you materials to make sharing the benefits of giving with the Sacramento Region Community Foundation simple, or you can invite people in your networks to book an introductory meeting with the Philanthropy Team. Each year, many of the charitable funds that we open began with a referral from a current fundholder. Thank you for spreading the word about your community foundation and the joy of local giving!
