We know just how powerfully local philanthropists can drive positive change by giving to the organizations they know and love — and by expanding their support to new nonprofits, too. In our work, we often encourage donors to consider the benefits of diversifying their giving portfolios.
Why? Because directing charitable dollars to a wider array of nonprofits can foster innovation in the nonprofit sector, target specific and emerging community needs, nurture local leadership, and create a more diverse and resilient philanthropic landscape.
As you review your giving portfolio, consider how you might diversify your philanthropy through these dimensions:
- Location: Each community in the Sacramento region has assets and riches, but the reality is that, due to disinvestment and neglect, some local neighborhoods face greater challenges. By supporting organizations that give those neighborhoods significant attention, you provide critical resources where they’re needed most — and strengthen our entire region as a result.
- Size: Most nonprofits our donors support have budgets above $1 million. While large organizations are vital advocates and service providers in our community, small nonprofits can focus on specific local or niche issues that may otherwise be overlooked. They can also respond quickly to emerging needs. Further, small organizations can be well-suited to donors who aim to make an outsized impact through volunteer service.
- Demographics served: Directing philanthropic resources to nonprofits that serve historically marginalized communities is a meaningful way to take action against enduring inequalities.
A great way to find new nonprofits to support is to explore our database of local nonprofits, GivingEdge, at givingedge.org. Its search filters make it easy to discover organizations by location, size, and demographics served, as well as mission category, leadership makeup, and more.
In addition, it’s our business to be knowledgeable about nonprofits in our community — literally! We’re always happy to work with fundholders to suggest high-impact organizations that may be unfamiliar, but that are making a meaningful difference in our region.
