Questions? Look below for answers to common inquiries. Please contact us if we can answer any questions about Big Day of Giving or supporting participating nonprofits through your Donor Advised Fund, Business Fund, or your IRA.

What is Big Day of Giving?

A program we’ve run since 2013, Big Day of Giving is an annual 24-hour giving event that unites caring people to raise funds for the nonprofits that strengthen El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties. The next Big Day of Giving is Thursday, May 7, 2026, with early giving opening April 23.

Big Day of Giving is a day-long celebration of giving to the causes that matter to you and your loved ones. All participating organizations have profiles on GivingEdge, our year-round database of local nonprofits, which make it easy for you to support causes you love and discover new nonprofits to support, too. Since our region’s first giving day in 2013, more than 60,000 donors have helped hundreds of local nonprofits raise $117 million through the effort!

Why should I give through my charitable fund?

For our fundholders who give through their Donor Advised Funds or Business Funds, unrestricted grants avoid standard Big Day of Giving credit card and transaction fees, so 100% of your donations support the nonprofits you designate and help reach their fundraising goals during Big Day of Giving! Grants directed to nonprofits during Big Day of Giving are unrestricted.

In addition to giving through your Donor Advised Fund or Business Fund, you might also consider making a tax-free Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA for this year’s Big Day of Giving. And as always, if you prefer to donate by credit card, you can visit bigdayofgiving.org between April 23 and 11:59 p.m. on May 7 to give.

How do I give through my IRA for Big Day of Giving?

If you’re age 70½ or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA to support nonprofits participating in Big Day of Giving. QCDs offer a simple, tax-efficient way to give directly from your retirement account while supporting causes in our region. They can also be a meaningful option for those who want to give from their IRA while continuing to support nonprofits across the community.

To ensure your gift is included, please ask your IRA administrator to send your check so it arrives by Thursday, May 7. The check should be issued for the full amount you wish to give and made payable to:

Sacramento Region Community Foundation
Attn: Big Day of Giving
955 University Avenue, Suite A
Sacramento, CA 95825

After requesting the check, please contact the Philanthropy Team so we can designate your QCD to the nonprofit(s) you intend to support during Big Day of Giving. The Foundation does not charge support fees on QCD checks.

How do I give through appreciated stock for Big Day of Giving?

You can support your favorite nonprofits by donating appreciated stock to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation for Big Day of Giving. Stock gifts can be a tax-smart way to give, and our team will work with you to ensure your donation is directed to the organizations you care about most.

Stock gifts must have a minimum of $500 per nonprofit. To allow time for processing, we encourage donors to initiate stock transfers by May 1. Please contact the Philanthropy Team to request transfer instructions and get started.

If you are a fundholder and wish to donate stock, you may prefer to send the stock directly to your charitable fund. This approach avoids the Big Day of Giving support fees described below, and our team is happy to help you determine the best option.

For donors who do not currently have a charitable fund with us, the Foundation charges a small support fee on stock gifts: 1% of the value of the gift received. For stock gifts valued at $10,000 or more, the support fee is reduced to 0.5%.

Will the nonprofits I support receive my contact information?

To give anonymously to local nonprofits during Big Day of Giving, please direct your grants through the donor portal or by contacting the Philanthropy Team.
