During World War II, while Benny Goodman kept morale high among the troops, young Jacqueline Sheridan née Chabanne quietly fought in France as a member of the French Resistance. Jacqueline forged documents for Allied soldiers caught behind enemy lines and transported supplies.
She sacrificed greatly, including the loss of her film-producer father and the family estate. After the war, Jacqueline met and married an American Army officer, Guy Mitchell Sheridan, and began a new life in the United States.
While Mitch worked as an editor of the Sacramento Bee, Jacqueline focused her talents on supporting local arts and emerging artists. After Mitch passed away, she left a bequest in her estate to establish the Guy M. and Jacqueline C. Sheridan Memorial Fund at the Foundation. Today, the fund continues the couple’s legacy of support for the causes they cared about, supporting visual and literary arts organizations in the region.
