The Reeve Family’s Enduring Legacy of Giving

Reflecting on how Christopher and Dana Reeve turned adversity into a force for change.

It’s award season, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is a documentary that has captured my attention. This powerful film goes beyond Christopher Reeve’s iconic role as Superman to explore his incredible journey of courage, resilience — and, yes, philanthropy.

After a life-altering horse-riding accident left him paralyzed, Christopher, alongside his wife Dana, used their platform to raise awareness and fund spinal cord injury research. Their story models the power of philanthropy, demonstrating how using one’s resources, voice, and experience can make a difference in the lives of others.

Christopher and Dana realized that the treatments and accommodations he needed to live fully after his accident were beyond reach for most other families. Consequently, they became advocates for research toward cures and increased access for people with disabilities. When they died in 2004 and 2006, respectively, the Reeves had left a lasting impact over their lifetimes.

Perhaps the most enduring legacy left by the Reeves is visible through their children, each of whom has taken an active leadership role in the philanthropic endeavors of their parents via the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and the Paralysis Resource Center. One of their sons, Will, recalled that his parents modeled philanthropic values for him and his siblings and that his ongoing philanthropy serves as a way to feel connected with his parents’ legacies, and to make them proud.

In our work, we support people and families dedicated to making a difference in the community. The Reeves’ story reminds us that heroes don’t need capes — they just need to take action to make the world a better place. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is a must-watch for anyone who believes in the power of giving back. Be sure to have tissues handy!
