March is Women’s History Month, a fitting time to recognize the growing role of women in philanthropy. Every day, women across generations are shaping generosity in meaningful ways. In my role, I have the privilege of seeing stories like this every day—women across generations shaping generosity in meaningful ways. That might be a retired executive supporting community initiatives with gifts from her IRA, a business leader building a culture of giving in the workplace, or a young adult learning about community impact through a family Donor Advised Fund established by her parents.
Women’s increasing influence over wealth is creating powerful opportunities to shape the future of philanthropy.
Research shows that trillions of dollars will transfer to women over the next decade through inheritance, earnings, and longevity. Studies also confirm what many families already experience: Women are increasingly leading charitable decisions, sometimes gradually as they become more involved in family giving, and sometimes following major life transitions when they assume responsibility for stewarding both financial resources and charitable intent.
High-profile philanthropists like MacKenzie Scott and Melinda Gates have helped spotlight this trend, but the story is much broader. Across communities, women are giving generously, supporting a wide range of causes, and prioritizing collaboration and hands-on involvement. Look no further than local women-focused giving circles, such as 100+ Women Who Care Yolo County, which the Sacramento Region Community Foundations stewards in partnership with Yolo Community Foundation.
As women step more fully into philanthropic leadership, thoughtful planning can help ensure their giving remains impactful and sustainable. Many families choose to establish a Donor Advised Fund as a flexible way to give together and involve the next generation. Others focus their philanthropy on broad issues through a Field of Interest Fund that provides both focus and flexibility. And for women who have dedicated years of service to a favorite nonprofit, strategic planning can help ensure that commitment continues through a Designated Fund — supporting immediate needs today while creating dependable funding for the future.
As more women step into philanthropic leadership, thoughtful planning can help ensure their giving reflects both their values and their vision for the future. I look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting the many women who are shaping stronger communities through their generosity.
