“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes.” These words from Andrew Carnegie set the tone for my presentation at the Philanthropy Summit, a day dedicated to celebrating the generosity of our region and exploring the many ways philanthropy transforms lives.
Though the Philanthropy Summit is behind us, the points I made can offer value year-round.
My goal for the presentation was simple: To help attendees reflect on their own philanthropic aspirations, dream about what’s possible, and explore strategies to turn those dreams into action. Together, we delved into planned giving — a powerful approach to ensuring your generosity has lasting impact.
We began by considering the key questions that define any meaningful giving plan. What charitable impact do you hope to achieve? When is the right time to give — now, later, or both? By identifying your goals, you can align your giving with your values and create a roadmap for impactful philanthropy.
Next, I introduced the concept of planned giving, highlighting the versatile tools available to support personal, financial, and philanthropic goals. Whether through Donor Advised Funds, a simple bequest or beneficiary designation, or a life income gift like a Charitable Gift Annuity, planned giving allows individuals to craft strategies tailored to their unique circumstances.
To bring these ideas to life, we explored real-world case studies, each presenting common planning scenarios and creative solutions. From establishing a Legacy Fund at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation that honors family values to creating tax-efficient ways to support multiple causes, these examples demonstrated how thoughtful planning can amplify both impact and joy.
We ended with a call to action: Start the conversation! Talk with the organizations you love, engage your family in your vision, and consult trusted advisors to design a plan that works for you. Most importantly, embrace the journey. Philanthropy isn’t just about the destination. It’s about the inspiration, connection, and purpose you find along the way.
I hope you’ll take time to reflect on your philanthropic goals and explore how planned giving can help you achieve them. With thoughtful planning, your generosity can truly be transformative — today and for generations to come!
