One of the best parts of my work at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation is seeing how gifts of all sizes can create lasting impacts, especially for smaller local nonprofits.
My colleagues and I help people and organizations support causes that matter to them. This year alone, we’ve ushered thousands of grants from the charitable funds we manage to nonprofits making a difference in the Sacramento region and beyond — an incredible feat of generosity, with effects rippling across our community.
I encourage the philanthropists we work with to support nonprofits of all sizes that they love — and, if they’re able, to give special attention to those organizations that are small but make a mighty impact.
Recently, an anonymous grant from The Fantastic Fund, a Donor Advised Fund, was directed to Lavender Library, small, a volunteer-run LGBTQ+ community library in Sacramento’s Midtown neighborhood. This cherished space offers not just a collection of books, films, zines, and archives, but a welcoming, safe gathering place for members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies to connect through book clubs, open mic nights, craft markets, and support groups.
As with many small nonprofits, the library depends on donations to keep its doors open, its lights on, and its collection growing.
Though the $1,500 contribution from The Fantastic Fund wasn’t massive by some standards, it offers a small nonprofit like the Lavender Library significant opportunities to strengthen their programming, build their resilience, and deepen their mission.
The Lavender Library team is putting the grant to good use. “This donation is directly supporting the library’s mission and programs,” said Cassidy Bremer, a member of its Board of Directors. “Donations of all sizes help us cover increased operational costs, expand programming, and add new resources to the collection. To all who give: Thank you!”
